The Goal of Optimal Health
In the current module of our Unstoppable course, we are looking at optimal health. This is such a subjective term because what is optimal for one person may be different for someone else. To me, health refers to not just the physical part but also the emotional, mental, and spiritual ways. Optimal health is having all of those realms in the best states they can be in, considering all circumstances. By achieving my optimal health, I am feeling good about myself - or at least have the negative aspects well-managed - in all of those spheres.
I honestly haven’t had my optimal health in a very long time. Many years ago, I was in a work environment that pushed my stress levels to ridiculous levels, which then caused my physical health to take a toll - each super stress out led to a case of shingles. (Yes, this led to 2 cases of shingles within a couple years - and no, I can’t get vaccinated as I’m well under the 60 years of age needed for it.) I also was diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), which a pulmonologist thought was just asthma but we’re now seeing that on top of seasonal allergies, seasonal bronchitis and seasonal laryngitis are also entering the mix. So I wouldn’t be surprised if the COPD diagnosis was somewhat applicable still.
You can learn more about COPD at:

For me to achieve my optimal health with my current circumstances, I need to make sure that I:
- Work with little to no stress
- Don’t let the stress bottle up - talk it out with people
- Get outside and get more fresh air
- Do breathing exercises and sing with music more to strengthen lungs
- Stay up on allergy medication, especially through the early spring and late fall
- Don’t overexert myself physically. So no more running up flights of stairs - no matter how much the younger me enjoyed that!
I like your wider view of optimal health - I agree that it must include mental, emotional, and spiritual health along side the physical aspect. Imbalance with any of these aspects will negatively affect the rest.
